You may not think that anyone would bother faking a Starbucks card! However, there have been a number of notable attempts that we know about. Primarily the US prototype cards and the Russian Doll cards.
Starbucks Prototype Card
On the front, text in white is much crisper on genuine card than the fake card.
On the back, there are differences in the font size and position. This is most noticeable
in the words “SAMPLE ONLY”.
The magnetic band is wider on the fake card.
The fake card is much whiter in colour on the back. This is due to the plasticizer used
in the composition of the plastic which keeps the card from becoming too brittle. On
cards produced in the late 90's, this resulted in the white plastic yellowing over time
and is normally evident on other early Starbucks cards like the Test Card and the
Merchant Credit Card, (both of which have also been faked). In more recent times when
the fake card was produced, the plastic used was more stable in colour for a much
longer period.
